As part of our First World War Centenary activities, we put on a special event this Remembrance season. On the 10th of November, a group of people interested in the First World War gathered at IT Services with the aim of improving Wikipedia’s coverage of Oxford during the War. Participants were first treated to a presentation about Oxford at War by the historian Stephen Barker. Martin Poulter, the Bodleian Libraries’ Wikimedian in Residence, then showed the group how to edit and improve existing Wikipedia articles.
The afternoon went quickly as everyone set to work. It was satisfying to see how easy it is to make a difference, for example by adding a relevant fact, confirming existing details by including references to reliable sources, inserting images or linking related articles to each other. Ideas for additional articles to include also came up, and we hope to see those appear before too long as everyone goes away ready and keen to do more with Wikipedia.
If you want to learn more about Wikipedia and see how you can contribute, keep an eye out for additional Wikipedia events and courses in the new year.
