Howard Noble presented at the Paint IT Green conference at Hertfordshire University. His remit was to provoke discussion on the theme: going green is not just about making machines more efficient. There was lots of interesting questions and comments:

Role of carrot and stick approaches

How difficult it is to change habits

Behaviour spread through social networks

Economic incentives e.g. tax and carbon markets

Howard also presented an overview of the internet usage pattern he is working on with David White under the provisional project title MO. More to follow on this topic soon!

He was impressed by how far Computer Aid International has taken their service over the last few years – I’ll say it here once again: at least 50% of the environmental effect of a computer occurs before it reaches our desk: mining, clean water, manufacturing factories, assembly plants, packaging. I asked all the obvious questions about whether shipping computers to Africa is a good idea and Computer Aid really have thought of everything. I was particularly impressed how they had got a thin client system working on a ration of 1:7 computers inside a room that runs everything off solar power. They have some interesting experience with putting Linux on old computers and getting more out of them. We just need kite powered boats to ship the equipment now.
