development for development

At ICTD2010 ( that’s Information and Communications Technology for Development) at RHUL ( that’s Royal Holloway University of London) this week I attended fascinating papers on mobile learning for maternal health in Rwanda, increased social standing for kiosk operators in India, teacher training in Macedonia, and use of video to teach non-literate learners vacuuming.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee gave the keynote while the auditorium popped with a thousand camera flashes.
There was much discussion of cross-disciplinarity and the need to explore other silos of research. This was a Geography conference, drawing on technology but seemingly unaware of research into teaching,  adult learning, learning technology and professional development.
