Our Academic IT and Information Security teams are working together to shine a light on internet safety on ‘Safer Internet Day’.
Safer Internet Day 2014 will take place on 11th February 2014, with the theme ‘Let’s create a better internet together’.
The official focus of the national day is on the experiences and behaviours of young people, but it seems appropriate at our event to extend that to include students and to those colleagues who enjoy exercising their online presence. I hope this day of discussion will allow some time for consideration of the experience of academic colleagues who feel threatened and abused online for sharing their opinions more widely.
What responsibility does the University hold in supporting staff who are publicly engaging?
If you have a magic wand, please come along.
Presentations will address the Oxford landscape and will include “How does your institution keep you safe?” by Dr Sara Perry, University of York, a scholar who was harassed online and has researched how academics are particularly vulnerable.
Update: What happened on the day.
