ABSTRACT

Over the last decade, the number of students being diagnosed with a specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia has increased. The expansion of digital learning has coincided with disability legislation, financial support and the wider disabled community becoming socially aware of support and provisions in the higher education sector. Through the support and provisions offered by Oxford and grant authorities, students diagnosed with specific learning difficulties can be provided with assistive technologies, study skills and exam provisions to support their learning. However, many students are not aware of the support and provisions offered by Oxford or grant authorities. Although some students receive support and technology, many are not familiar with the processes to receive support, the diverse range of technologies available at Oxford and the various forms of strategies for managing essays, exams, taking notes and managing stress. In many cases, students can become overwhelmed with the large quantity of independent reading and writing required at Oxford.
Working with Oxford’s Disability Advisory Service, the solution is to design and develop an accessible self-personalising app, called MoLexia, representing mobile literacy support, with ‘lexia’ meaning reading. The aim is to guide students in understanding their difficulties and enable them to access information in an up-to-date accessible mobile format through various forms of media, such as videos, animations, visual forms and maps. From a growing database of ammonised research data on learning strategies, styles and assistive technology support, the app would suggest solutions, tips and advice for dealing with dyslexia (other SpLDs), and where to find appropriate support across the university.
